For Buyers: What You Need to Know Before You Bid
Auctions are one of the most transparent ways to buy — once you know how they work.
Whether you're looking at real estate, farm equipment, vehicles, trailers, or tools, buying at auction can be a smart move. But if you've never done it before, the process can feel unfamiliar. Here are the questions and concerns we hear most often from first-time (and returning) buyers — answered honestly.
MYTH #1: You can get tricked into bidding on something you didn't mean to.
FACT: Bidding is a deliberate action — you raise your hand, click a button, or hold up your bidder number. Accidentally bidding by scratching your nose is a trope from old movies, not reality. At our auctions, we watch for genuine bids and give every bidder a fair opportunity to participate intentionally.
MYTH #2: You can't inspect items before you bid.
FACT: Inspection is a standard part of our auction process. We announce inspection dates and times in advance so that buyers can examine real estate, equipment, vehicles, and other items before the auction begins. We strongly encourage all bidders to inspect in person. Buy with your eyes open — that's how it should work.
MYTH #3: Auction prices are always a steal — you'll definitely get a bargain.
FACT: Auctions can yield great value, but they're not a guaranteed discount. When multiple qualified buyers compete, prices reflect real market demand. You may get a great deal, or you may bid to market value. What you will get is a fair, transparent process where the price is determined by competition — not by a seller's asking price.
MYTH #4: There are hidden fees that jack up the price at the end.
FACT: Our buyer's premium — an additional percentage added to the hammer price — is clearly disclosed in the terms and conditions before the auction begins. There are no hidden charges. We post our terms publicly, and we encourage every buyer to read them before bidding. The final purchase price is the hammer price plus the buyer's premium, period.
MYTH #5: If you win the bid, you have to haul everything off that same day.
FACT: Removal timelines vary by auction and are always specified in the terms and conditions posted before the sale. We give buyers reasonable time to arrange transportation and removal. For large equipment or real estate, we work through the process with you. Dates and expectations are always communicated clearly in advance.
MYTH #6: Online bidding puts in-person bidders at an advantage.
FACT: Our platform is designed to give all registered bidders — online or in person — equal access to every lot. For our simulcast auctions, online bids are received and processed in real time alongside floor bids. No group has an inherent advantage. The highest bid wins, regardless of where that bidder is located.
MYTH #7: You're buying blind — what you see is what you get and there's no recourse.
FACT: All items at our auctions are sold as-is, which means we don't offer warranties or guarantees on condition. That's exactly why inspection periods exist. We describe items accurately and honestly — we will never overstate condition or hide known issues. Our reputation depends on being straight with buyers, every time.
MYTH #8: Real estate auctions are risky because you can't back out.
FACT: Real estate purchases at auction do require buyers to be ready to proceed — which is why we provide property information, inspection opportunities, and clear terms well in advance of the sale. Qualified buyers who do their homework aren't taking a blind leap; they're making an informed decision in a competitive marketplace. We're available before the auction to answer questions about any property.
MYTH #9: You need deep pockets or industry connections to compete.
FACT: Anyone who meets the registration requirements can bid. Whether you're a first-time buyer looking for a piece of equipment for your small operation or an investor bidding on real estate, you stand on equal footing with every other registered bidder. Auctions are one of the most level playing fields in commerce.
MYTH #10: The auctioneer can run up the price against you.
FACT: Licensed auctioneers in Virginia are bound by law and professional ethics. Bid manipulation is illegal and contrary to everything we stand for. At Allied Auctioneers, we operate with full integrity — every bid called or accepted online is a real bid from a real bidder. Our reputation in this community is built on trust, and we intend to keep it that way.
